Earth Day Clean Up a Huge Success
Des Moines Earth Day Clean Up was
held on Saturday April 21 from 9 to noon and we had over 80
volunteers who picked up over 23 bags of trash, 16 bags of
litter and 22 bags of weeds and yard type debris. A barbecue
followed at the marina. Mayor Sheckler greeted volunteers and
thanked them for their efforts.
Farmers Market Underway
A beautiful and sunny day greeted the
opening of the Farmers Market on June 2. Turnout was a huge
success. Destination Des Moines hosted a booth at the market
and comments were well received. Thanks for our volunteers who
helped man the booth that day and to our set up and clean up
crews. The market continues thru October and we need additional
volunteers for manning the booth on Saturdays between 10 and 2.
The Farmers Market committee and volunteers had an opportunity
to appear on Northwest Afternoon TV Show on Friday, June 15,
2007. What great exposure for our market vendors and our city!
Flower Baskets adorn the streets and
shops
Several of our local businesses and
homeowners took the opportunity to purchase flower baskets for
beautification of their businesses and streetscapes. Baskets
were ordered in March and delivered in May. We ordered and
delivered over 53 baskets in total. They look beautiful and a
huge thank you to Zenith Holland Gardens for working with
Destination Des Moines on this project.
Business Breakfast Held
Destination Des Moines sponsored a
breakfast in March in conjunction with the Seattle Southside
Tourism bureau and Southwest King County Chamber of Commerce’s
regularly scheduled meetings. All area business owners and
property owners were invited to come and hear about Destination
Des Moines and also to give input as to what they would like to
see to help enhance their businesses. A survey was given to
Waterfront District business owners and questions were
answered. There was an excellent turnout and as a result, we
received some new members. Both Seattle Southside and the
Southwest King County Chamber work to promote the cities they
serve and both work to enhance traffic and tourism to members of
their organizations.
