Annual Meeting Minutes
February 10, 2007, 9am - 11 am
Police Meeting Room, Des Moines Washington
The meeting was called to order at 9:10 am by current President,
Leesa Kofmehl.
Leesa introduced the board members and thanked everyone for all
the energy, enthusiasm, and effort shown since our inception
last August.
Secretary Dianne Jacobsen reported on the budget and current
funds available in the budget. As soon as the Agreement with
the City of Des Moines is signed, a check in the amount of
$15000 will be forthcoming from the city.
Committee Reports followed; below are the current standing
committees and their chairperson/s:
Youth and Seniors - Kaylene Moon
Kaylene reported on the tremendous success of the Pacific Middle
School after school program in conjunction with Parks and Rec. Kaylene
showed pictures of the cooking class that the students are
enjoying. They currently have 25 young people enrolled and the
program has been very successful. Cost to each student is $15
and no student is denied based on need.
Membership - Susan Kraber
Susan reported we have 29 members to date and as of Saturday, we
had 10 more sign up. The goal is lofty for a total of 500
members by this time next year. New brochures, membership
packets, and membership forms have been created. Also,
membership committee is working on a welcome wagon to welcome
new businesses and persons into the community.
Events and Activities- Bob Houston
Bob reported on the upcoming events and activities over the next
several months. These events and activities are posted on our
website, calendars throughout city, City Currents, and the city
website. Copies of the upcoming events are attached. There are
a number of outstanding events.
Waterfront and Tourism Enhancement - Co-Chairs Virg Staiger
and Jane Ipsen
Virg Staiger reported on the committees current goals of
designing a walk able community in conjunction with the
Storefront Studio project. The committee is working towards
making access between the waterfront, the marina, and the
downtown businesses a viable, pleasing, connection that captures
the eye of residents, boaters, and visitors to our city so they
stay, play, eat, and shop.
Aesthetics and Beautification - Leslie Newman
Leslie Newman reported on flower basket (order form attached)
orders currently being taken from individuals and local
businesses to enhance the downtown area. Earth Day clean up on
April 21, (flyer attached), and the establishment and
enforcement of minimum property maintenance codes,
beautification awards, and working with the city to enhance and
empower citizens in keeping the areas around their
homes/businesses clean. Leslie also reported on cooperative
efforts of Water District 54, the City, South King County Fire
and Rescue and Developers who are coming to together to best
decide how to enhance water pressure and related infrastructure
to further provide for development of our downtown core.
Communications: - Julie Nelson
Julie is working with Matt Moeller to help expose our website,
our communications, and to better organize and promote events
and activities going on.
Website Development - Matt Moeller
Matt is completing the brochure and is working with all of us to
better promote and enhance the website and communications on the
website. Committee chairs are to email Matt their minutes from
each meeting, their current member roster and any changes or
updates to their committees as well as upcoming events,
activities, or accomplishments.
Arts Commission underway! The Des Moines Arts Commission is
underway and is currently looking for local artists to help draw
the new poster for this year Farmers Market. Commission members
will be appointed by the Mayor for terms of 1, 2, and 3 years.
Mayor Sheckler let us know that applications are currently being
reviewed and appointments will be made the week of 2/22/07 and
confirmed at City Council that week.
Storefront Studio Project
Virg Staiger and Leslie Newman reported on the University of
Washington Storefront Studio project which will be in place in
late summer in downtown Des Moines. The UW Urban Planning
department will be working with our city, the residents, and
local businesses to help us design and implement a "downtown
marina district" in conjunction with the Ravenhurst Economic
Development report which was presented to and adopted by City
Council in late 2004. Everyone who is interested in Des Moines
is requested to give input.
Marina Master Plan
Joe Dusenbury had excellent visuals and proposals for all to see
of the current proposed Marina Master Plan. Joe explained how
funds would be raised, what is going on today to begin the
process of upgrading the marina and what the future phases will
be.
Mayor Sheckler
Mayor Sheckler thanked Destination Des Moines for all of the
efforts since its inception in August. Mayor Sheckler expressed
his support of our members and all of the work of all of our
committees. He reiterated the fact that the city has designated
a one time $15000 contribution provided our agreement with the
city for contract of services is approved by city council. The
agreement with the city is on the city council agenda for
2/22/07. All of this began as a result of Mayor Sheckler's
Leadership Summit which took place two years ago.
Joe Jewell - Nominating Committee
Joe introduced the slate of officers running for positions of
President, Vice President, and Secretary. There was only one
opposed position, President. Joe also explained how
Proxy/Absentee Voting was handled and that he had received 4
absentee ballots. Joe thanked everyone for their input and
nominations for positions.
The slate of those running for office included;

Secretary, Dianne Jacobson.
The voting was held, and the new officers for the 2007/2008 year
are:

Leesa handed the gavel to Leslie; Leslie thanked Leesa for her
tremendous amount of work these last 7 months.
Next meeting of Destination Des Moines is Thursday, March 8,
2007 at 4pm at the Police Meeting Room.
